Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, born Chris Jackson, was an All-American Basketball Player in College at Louisiana State University. After college he entered the 1990 NBA Draft and was picked 3rd by the Denver Nuggets. In his early years he would convert to Islam and change his name to Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf.
__
Two decades before Colin Kaepernick in March 1996, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf refused to stand for the national anthem, calling the American flag a symbol of oppression and injustice and therefore put his head down and prayed during the anthem.
__
Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf's advice to youth is, always be with the righteous. If you want to be great at something surround yourself with people that are better than you at that something. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf also says, never comprise Islam for fame and wealth, because Islam is worth more than anything that this world has to offer.
